Another proud achievement came from mahadaya (students of Cultural Sciences). Nurcholish Ramadhan, a 2024 student from the Department of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture, Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM, successfully directed the production of a theater performance entitled Sat-Set. The show was performed by Teater Berdaya in Prabusena (Cultural, Art, and Islamic Appreciation Stage of PD IPM Bantul) 2025 on Saturday night, May 31, 2025 at 20.00 WIB, at the 1st Floor Hall of the Da’wah Building of PDM Bantul.

The implementation of the Productive Javanese Writing Course in the even semester of the 2024/2025 academic year at the Javanese Language, Literature and Culture Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FIB UGM), presents a different learning atmosphere from previous years. Batch 2024 students get direct assistance from Wikimedia members in learning article writing, especially in Javanese.
The collaboration between the Javanese Language, Literature and Culture Study Program and Wikimedia took place from Tuesday, May 6, 2025 to Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Through this collaboration, students not only learn the basics of article writing, but also get an in-depth understanding of the world of Wikipedia, including the structure and language style of article writing, things that are not allowed in writing on Wikimedia, and an introduction to the Wikimedia organization in Indonesia. The students even had the opportunity to write articles directly in Javanese.
Basabuja FIB UGM Team Won Bronze Medal in National Essay Competition of Andalas Scientific Week 2025
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) students have made another proud achievement. The Basabuja team consisting of students of the Javanese Language, Literature and Culture Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), won a bronze medal in the national essay competition at the Andalas 2025 Scientific Week. The competition was organized by the Political Science Student Association (HIMAPOL) of Andalas University, West Sumatra.
The Basabuja team, which is an acronym for Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture, consists of four students namely Muhammad Siswoyo, Yudha Adistira, Dwi Mei Saroh, and Dian Nitami. In the competition that was held offline, the Basabuja team carried the subtheme of Law and Culture with the essay title Kuṭāramanawa: Ancient and Present Ramanawa.

A solemn atmosphere enveloped the Senate Hall, Central Building of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Thursday (8/5/2025), when the Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM inaugurated Prof. Dr. Hendrokumoro, M.Hum. as Professor of Linguistics. This inauguration became a historic moment for the Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture Study Program of the Faculty, which was also proud of the achievement of one of its best lecturers.
With the aim of improving understanding related to lectures, the lecturer of codicology, Dr. Sri Ratna Saktimulya, M.Hum. brought Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture students of the 2023 class to visit three libraries; the Widyabudaya Keraton Ngayogyakarta library, the Sonobudoyo Museum library, and the Widyapustaka Pura Pakualaman library.
This field lecture started in the morning at 08.30 until the afternoon at 15.00. Students were asked to gather in the parking lot of the Keraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat before 08.30 for joint preparation and direction. The first destination visited was the Widyabudaya library. There, students were invited and accompanied by abdi dalem to look around and get to know the rooms in the library such as the reservation room, archive room, depo-archive room. In addition, students were also given manuscripts to observe their physical condition according to the material that had been taught such as the paper material, the illumination contained in the manuscript, and others.
The fate of a culture, including its language and literature, ultimately rests in the hands of its people. Acknowledging this, the Study Program of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FIB UGM), held a special event on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, featuring Drs. Suhartoyo, a passionate advocate and observer of Javanese literature and culture. Drs. Suhartoyo, himself an alumnus of the program, actively manages Majalah Belik, a Javanese-language magazine, and is involved in the Javanese Literature and Culture Association (Paguyuban Sastra dan Budaya Jawa, Pasbuja) Kawi Merapi.
On Tuesday (March 25, 2025), Dr. Arsanti Wulandari, M.Hum., a lecturer from the Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FIB UGM), discussed the life of Prince Diponegoro as depicted in the Babad Ngayogyakarta during the first session of the Nusantara Manuscript Literacy Class. The event was organized by the Center for Library Information Services and Nusantara Manuscript Management (Pujaasintara) of the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia (Perpusnas RI), under the theme “Another Side of Diponegoro: The Prince from Two Perspectives.”
On Monday, April 21, 2025, a number of students from the Department of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), attended a cultural event titled Uyon-Uyon Hadiluhung Senen Pon held at the Kagungan Dalem Bangsal Kasatriyan of the Karaton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat (Yogyakarta Palace). The event was part of the ceremonial commemoration of the birthday (wiyosan dalem) of Sri Sultan Hamengku Bawana X, which falls on Monday Pon evening, or the eve of Tuesday Wage according to the Javanese calendar.
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is pleased to announce an important event: the inaugural professorial lecture of Prof. Dr. Hendrokumoro, M. Hum., from the Study Program of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture, Faculty of Cultural Sciences. The Association of Indonesian Regional Language and Literature Students (Imbasadi) held a cultural webinar titled “Mencintai yang Dekat, Mengenal yang Jauh: Imbasadi Menjawab Tantangan AI dan Global lewat Kebudayaan Daerah” (Loving What is Near, Understanding What is Far: Imbasadi Responds to the Challenges of AI and Globalization through Regional Culture) on Sunday (April 13, 2025). The event was part of the series commemorating Imbasadi’s 32nd anniversary.
The webinar featured R. Bima Slamet Raharja, S.S., M.A., a lecturer from the Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, as the keynote speaker. Noviyanti Alfitri, a student from the same program and a member of Imbasadi’s Research and Community Service Division (P2M), served as the moderator.
