The Study Program of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture at Universitas Gadjah Mada remains committed to strengthening relationships and building a strong network with its alumni through collaboration with the Student Association of Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture (HMJ Kamastawa). Presented below are several alumni from the program who have made significant contributions across various fields, both nationally and internationally.
Foreign Lecturer of Indonesian and Javanese Language and
Culture at Beijing Foreign Studies University, China
Hendy Yuniarto, S.S., M.A., is a 2007 graduate of the Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture Study Program. Since 2015, he has been serving as a foreign lecturer of Indonesian and Javanese language and culture at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). In the academic year 2021–2022, he was a visiting lecturer at Beijing Language and Culture
University (BLCU), and in 2024–2025, he is serving as a visiting lecturer at Peking University (PKU). Over the course of his nine-year career in China, he has published several books in the country, covering topics such as Indonesian and Javanese language textbooks, Indonesian literature, translation, culture, and education in Indonesia. He currently serves as the Chair of KAGAMA China for the 2021–2026 term, actively fostering connections between Chinese universities and UGM alumni academics. He is also actively involved in promoting both Chinese and Indonesian cultures through articles and videos on social media platforms in both countries.
Philologist at the National Library of the Republic of
Indonesia
Tio Cahya Sadewa, S.S., is a 2016 graduate of the Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada. He currently works as a philologist at the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia. He is part of the Substantive Group for Nusantara Manuscript Management under the Center for Library Information Services and Nusantara Manuscript Management. In addition to his daily duties of assisting the public in accessing ancient manuscripts, he is actively engaged in philological work, including transliteration, translation, and scholarly analysis of classical texts. His research focuses on 19th-century Javanese manuscripts such as Serat Rama, Babad Demak, Piwulang, Cariyos Empu, and Lakon Wayang, among others. Artist and Cultural Practitioner
Paksi Raras Alit, S.S., M.A., is a 2002 graduate of the Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture Study Program who currently works as an artist and practitioner of Javanese culture. He is the founder of Jawacana, a Javanese literary community that has been offering free weekly Javanese script classes and other cultural workshops to the public since 2017. He is actively involved in creative work, including managing the YouTube channel PaksiTV, writing arts and culture articles for mainstream media, authoring books on Javanese philosophy, and serving as a speaker, curator, and expert advisor for various cultural events. In addition, he engages in a wide range of artistic disciplines, including performing with the traditional arts group Mantradisi, the music group Paksiband, and working as a director, writer, and actor in the film industry. His notable achievements include Panen Raya Album (nominee for the 2023 AMI Awards in the category of Best Contemporary Keroncong Artist), Winner of the 2021 Javanese Literature Manuscript Competition, Best Graduate of UGM’s Postgraduate Program in 2023, and, Language and Literature Empowerment Awardee (Universitas PGRI Semarang, 2024).
