Last May, a 2023 Javanese Language, Literature, and Culture student, Fega Achillea Maydena, chaired the XXXV Open Water Training (LPT) activity organized by the Gadjah Mada Diving Society. LPT is one of the annual agendas of the requirements for certification activities for divers as well as the end of the series of education arranged in the Gadjah Mada Diving Society education curriculum. This activity is also a means of introducing the sea for the first time for prospective Gadjah Mada Diving Society members and the application of the material that has been obtained during weekly training. In addition, this activity is also intended to create a sense of love for the sea and regeneration of Gadjah Mada Diving Society members.

This time, LPT XXXV was held in Karimunjawa for five days, May 11-15, 2025. Every day, participants dive 1-2 times per day with a total of four dive spots. On the second day, participants visited two sides of Menjangan Besar Island to dive at two different points. The first spot, named Titik Kagama, is a sandy and not too deep dive spot that is suitable for adapting to sea water and practicing basic skills. While in the second spot, participants are invited to slightly deeper waters, namely Maer.

Then on the third day, participants dive on Cemara Besar Island. With relatively clear waters and gradual depths, this area is an ideal location for practicing scuba diving skills by touring. There are various kinds of colorful coral reefs and small fish from the sergeant major, chromis, and wrasse species swimming between the gaps.

Every day after diving, an evaluation and briefing session is always held to correct things that are not right and prepare for the next day’s activities. The materials trained in these open waters include mask & snorkel clearing, buddy breathing, hovering, touring without a mask, and others according to the material that has been prepared in such a way as to obtain A1 certification. Of course, the dives carried out have complied with the CMAS-Indonesia SOP.

Fega was elected as the head of the LPT XXXV activity since November 2024 through a chairman auction. “The reason I want to become the head of this LPT is to improve my organizational skills and gain leadership experience,” she said. In addition to being the chair of the LPT XXXV activities, Fega is also currently holding the position of General Secretary in the UKM management structure.

With this activity, Fega shows that literature students can still explore other worlds besides literature. “So after graduating, I hope to be able to adapt to many fields,” she said.
